Farewell:

Life has become very exciting. My beloved had an article written about himself and his work by Andrea Louise Thomas for a Mornington Peninsula paper called ‘Mint.’ This young woman, a poet, came into our lives like a hurricane. After much talk, we were encouraged to see the play, ‘Hamlet’, directed by Damien Ryan for the Bell Shakespeare Company. A really fresh approach was taken as a modern day thriller, with modern dress and a simple but magnificent set. This brought back memories of my student days.

Thursday I joined a Writing Skills workshop from 9.15-2.30 in Sandringham, an hour from where we live. The tutor, Claire Gaskin, is also a poet. Her class is inspirational. The group is full of keen writers of different genres, all willing to help one another. I had taken the first couple of chapters of my book, and with their input, I’m totally rewriting it! Besides rewriting, there is homework. Five questions, and then a 500-word short story. So this ten-week course is certainly helping me to refresh my ideas.

Thursday night we went to hear Rosie Batty, Australian of the Year, talk with Jon Faine, an ABC radio personality, in Mornington. Rosie was launching her book, ‘A Mother’s Story’, which I have read. It is inspiring to read and hear how she overcame so much and is continuing to work bringing family violence to the fore. Laws need to be changed and much has begun to change already.

Friday night Christopher had his painting in the Salon des Refuse´s, opening in Mornington. It was a big crowd and Rosie Batty opened the exhibition.

This is the piece that I wrote for my writing class that had to start with, ‘And we’d been so clever,’ that links into the story above.

And we’d been so clever sitting in the second row, out of the limelight. The woman in the front row turned around and denounced my husband’s painting. ‘It’s a terrible painting. I ‘m familiar with Rosie Batty and that’s not her, she is such a strong woman. It’s a complete dirge, just look at it!’

My husband said, ‘That’s an old word.’

‘Yes, I’ve an understanding of words and I’m prepared to use them.’

My husband eggs her on some more,

‘Yes, she wears black glasses and here she’s wearing really light ones.’

The woman finding a ready audience really steamed ahead.

The speeches started and very soon Christopher is pointed out as the artist of the Rosie painting. The redness rose from her neck to her hairline in total embarrassment. She turned around to apologise at the end of the speeches, and Chris dismissed her, saying,

‘Don’t bother, I’m used to it,’ and walked off. It made our night seeing this haughty woman squirm.

The painting looks very light and doesn’t photograph well, but it has some amazing detail if closely examined. Chris found it a deeply spiritual experience painting Rosie.

This shall be my last post for some time. I have been having computer problems, and continue to have them. So I’m going to have to learn to use a new laptop. I am not sure if the number of e-mails has been choking my computer, so I am cutting off for the present. I shall miss you all, but am sure one day I’ll get this computer business sorted out.

Thank you all for being my friends from afar and I wish you all well with your writing and blogging. Adieu for the present!

See what happens when I am gone too long!! 😦 My dear friend, and one of the writers whose blogs I SO enjoy, has left for awhile! I hope, not for too long! 😦 I am happy for you, Barbara, that you are taking th writing class. It sounds wonderful! I loved the passage you shared with us here. And I know you are so proud of Christopher! Rosie Batty sounds so inspiring.
My timing is terrible. 😦 I finished a review of Lily’s Wish and have emailed it to you today. I will write a blog post, also, but I’m so sorry that my timing for doing this is when you are on blogging sabbatical. I haven’t been blogging since July, and am sad to come back and find you away. I will miss you!!
I am going to link the blog post to your blog; readers can read older posts, and I will also link it to Frontier Publising. And add the review on Goodreads. I bought another copy of Lily’s Wish, this time for my sister, who is a grandmother-to-be. I am happy for her!
Best to you, my dear friend!<3 Love, Dixie

Dixie, what a lovely surprise to receive your review of ‘Lily’s Wish’! It may inspire the publishers to publish another edition, or, perhaps accept another story! Thank you so much for your enthusiastic post, buying and introducing others to this story. It was really good to hear from you and to hear about your busy life. Wishing you and the family a Happy Thanksgiving! ❤

I came back from the netherworld for a day or two only to find you have left WP for an unknown time. Perhaps when I’m next back for longer, you shall be, too. I have missed your varied posts and your warm personality, Barbara. I loved Christopher’s handling of the situation here!

So, you’re to be an actor as well as author! I hope your first post upon return is about that experience.

Good gosh, you sound busy–and all a good busyness. (Is that a word? Business just didn’t work there, although surely that’s its etymology.)

In case you should read this in time, have the warmest most grateful of Thanksgivings. Perhaps you’ll be back before Christmas : )

Getting your e-mail, O. Babe, is a real treat! (Now that my in mail is not cluttered with hundreds of overwhelming posts). Blogging has its up side, but also bogged me down as well.
I’m glad that you’ve returned from the netherworld. I’m sure that’s a story in itself. I hope you have a wonderful warm Thanksgiving with friends and family. I’m sure the temptation of getting back with my blogging friends will overcome my need for solitude and other things. 🙂

Dear Janet, I think of you in this class that I’ve joined, such interesting writers. Yesterday we read from ‘The Collected Stories of Lydia Davis.’ Exciting times discovering new authors. With the support of these writers, I feel I’m no longer treading water, but seeing the errors of my ways! Thank you for your kind thoughts and I’m sure one day I’ll return. ❤

Best of luck with the laptop…Windows 10, I presume? It has me frustrated as well figuring out the word processing, but it is quite intuitive and once you find your particular quirks, it will be like second nature again. I still have not taken the time to do the tutorial, so I can whip in and out of my files with ease. I have been putting off starting a blog, but have been eavesdropping on a few to get the gist of others’ pursuits. I enjoy the demeanor of yours and share many things in common with you and your husband. Alas, my husband is no longer living and it is the bane of my existence. Having been a strong-willed only child, I thought I would be a resilient ‘single’, but find I miss him sorely at every turn in my life. Enjoy your break and particularly, your husband. i will await your return. Sincerely, CA

Carol Ann, I’m sorry to hear that you are alone now. I can only imagine how devastating that must be. I do hope you get into blogging and really find it satisfying. It can be a very absorbing and rewarding hobby. Yes, last night I sat in front of the lap top, having lost the instructions and had my first ‘go’. It’s such a pity the lessons are so far from here. I shall persist. It took me 20 minutes to open the rotten thing!! Where do you live Carol Ann? Wishing you peace and contentment, Barbara

It’s good that you are reasonably close to both of your children. My closest child is two hours and 20 minutes, and the other two are ages by car, but by plane, only an hour, with an hour to the airport added on! I’m going to have to get a map of America, so I can picture where you are!

You enriched my blogging word for quiet some time, you were kind to me, when I had only a few readers and I enjoyed reading your post and comments. I will miss you -but you knew that. I wish you and your husband all the best.

I hope you will come back, but if not know that my well wishes are with you always.
