Chaos descends:

Imagine being able to know what other people were thinking?

There would be fragmented thoughts jumbled up with my own…

The brain is an amazing computer like construct, but having input from all I meet; that would be like a nightmare. I wouldn’t be able to distinguish my own thoughts!

Managing to control my own thought is difficult enough, with occasional memory loss. Remembering peoples’ names needs my full attention. If other people’s random thoughts were congesting my already unreliable memory, it would be a hell. In fact it would make me go mad.

Quiet times are essential to my peace of mind. Listening to what people are saying takes concentration. Body language gives away sufficient suggestion as to whether someone is lying or not. There are enough subtle hints without being able to hear another’s thoughts.

Of course, maybe this ability could be a good idea for the start of a novel? Or no, would it end up being just too confusing?

Full Disclosure:  A mad scientist friend offers you a chip that would allow you to know what the people you’re talking to are thinking. the catch: you can’t turn it off. Do you accept the chip?

Wow! I think I’ll stay the way I was born, and stick to reading body language to try and understand what people are thinking / feeling. I have enough noise in my head with only my thoughts, I can’t imagine having other peoples’ thoughts in there as well! Would surely make it harder to stay balanced and grounded throughout the day!! Great food for thought 🙂

Yes, my own thoughts attempting to be heard are sufficient! Why confuse things?

There are one or two people in the world (there was a Russian, whose name I cannot remember), who have full access to their memory, or rather their memory does not compress and consolidate. They are brilliant at mnemonic tricks, but not necessarily happy – because they cannot turn it off! “Would the gods the giftie gie us, to see ourselves as others see us.” Hmm, I think I’d like to know, but I’m probably happier not.

I think being able to turn off bad memories, for instance, keeps us sane!
I love watching the Egg Heads on TV, and seeing their amazing ability to remember so much!
My brain has many resting cells! 🙂

I can’t even cope with the radio the builders are listening to on the other side of the road. Thankfully I can’t hear it from the back garden. I’d turn down the chip and hope they turn down the radio.
